Systems, including schools, churches, athletic teams, and arts programs have expectations that are universally applied to all kids. And, in fact, the systems do function better if all the kids meet the expectations!  But kids are individuals and they bring with them their own individual stories which inform how they deal with the expectations of the systems in which they must exist. What do we do when the kids bring a part of their stories into the system and they require individual attention? The concept of “Everyone Has a Story” is helpful in asking better questions and more effectively discerning how to help kids who are struggling in the system. Mental health triage reminds us to assess student’s individual experience to determine best next steps, NOT to solve or eliminate a problem.

Outcomes:

  • Concept of looking at emotional and behavioral challenges through the lens of individual story.

  • A process of investigation that can lead to better supports for kids who are struggling in the system.

  • Understanding that adults in the system can effectively connect kids with supports through a triage mindset.
